Welcome to Bellacopia
Bellacopia’s rustic culinary culture is heightened with fantastical machines, gliders, and clockwork designs that combines steampunk flair with Renaissance style.  Cable carriages in the style of  America's Old West are decorated ornately and  pulled by horses. Townsfolk of diverse backgrounds share meals in open cafes and bistros.  Bellacopia gives a feeling of equality among the rich and poor--an island playground of inventors and outlaws where food is art--and artists are celebrities.  Status is earned by talent and creativity, in service to the cause of Authenticity and Beauty.   Bellacopia is ruled by those bold enough to invent, create, and defy tradition.  Baba’s story is one of mentorship, courage, and originality --a culinary myth during the dawn of Western Civilization when unique self-expression was cherished like gold and silver.

Papo & Baby Baba1.jpg
BABA & PAPO  —The PASTANOVA Legacy

A rare  meteor shower over the island of Bellacopia fell like embers to awaken sacred ingredients hidden in Nature. They call it the Pastanova Sky — a prophetic sign initiating a Quest  to complete the mythical Sauce of Immortality. In  a moment of delight and failure,  master chef  Papo Gostoso finds redemption in the form of a baby boy floating in the Bay of Bellacopia.   Baba was discovered cradled in the sea--wrapped in pasta and starlight.                                                                                                              In the wake of failure and disgrace,  Baba was raised in an orphanage converted to a culinary school.  Papo abandoned his worldly ambition to share his wisdom and joy with the children of Bellacopia and raised Baba to understand that  the greatest recipes can never be written down.   They must be remembered as a flavor inside the soul. To complete the Sauce of Immortality,  a chef must have the courage to face the powers of Nature and find those powers within himself.

Chef Prodigy • Artist •  Rising Hero
Baba Pastanova was discovered under the prophetic Pastanova meteor shower in the Bay of Bellacopia. As a prodigy, he possesses a natural understanding of flavor and balance--further developed by his mentor and father Papo Gostoso. Baba is a playful and sincere artistic soul; but raised in an orphanage without family roots shapes his personality.

Baba's confidence is shaken by trauma and loss at an early age. When he is called to complete the Sauce of Immortality, Baba must search for each supernatural ingredient and taste it--to awaken the power within himself and understand how to use it.  His Journey through fame, heartbreak, betrayal and cosmic wonder, teaches Baba that humility, love, and authenticity are the true ingredients of heroism.

Master Chef • Mentor • Father                       Papo is the soulful mentor of young chefs in  Bellacopia. Once the most celebrated culinary talents in Rome--he served the Pope before being chosen by Leonardo for the Quest. He failed through his own moral weakness and vanity--carrying a quiet sorrow for his mistakes. He adopted Baba and retreated to the culinary school, where he traded divine ambition for humble service. Papo’s teaches that life's flavors must be in balance and proportion.                        To be a chef is to follow a higher calling to serve others through harmony, love and good taste: preserving secrets of the Celestial Spoon.

Genius in Exile

Leonardo and Zinfandella in Bellacopia

Legendary Renaissance master, Leonardo Divino sets the tone for the entire culture of Bellacopia
His inventions and artistic genius flourished under the patronage of the Duke of Milan until he crossed the line and had a child with the Duke's sister Mona Lisa. He was exiled to raise their daughter on a vineyard in Bellacopia, where he continued to create new vehicles for land and air travel, robots, parachutes and things never imagined before. Zinfandella lived a carefree life as a child, working in the vineyards and spending time with her favorite young chef and companion, Baba Pastanova

Raised in Bellacopia but refined in Milan under the influence of her mother, Mona Lisa, Zinfandella
carries both compassion and a lingering sense of superiority. Her return to Bellacopia awakens
memories of childhood freedom, creativity, and her bond with Baba. She is intuitive, brave, and
skilled in strategy, but she battles an internal divide: between the person Bellacopia shaped her to be
and the image Milan demanded. Her arc is one of authenticity. Through heartbreak, disillusionment,
and revelation, she discovers that love - not status - is the ingredient she was missing.

Leonardo Divino

Inventor - Father - Genius in Exile

Once the prized genius of Milan’s royal court, Leonardo Divino was exiled for scandal — not for his inventions, but for fathering a daughter with Mona Lisa, sister to the powerful Duke Vincenzio. His fall from grace led him to Bellacopia, where he was exiled with Zinfandella to build a new life away from politics and patrons. His life's work grounded in creativity and the love of Nature flourished while he raised his daughter on a vineyard estate.

Leonardo is more than a brilliant mind. His charisma and talent anchors the reputation of Bellacopia as a Utopia. As  the architect of an artistic renaissance, his inventions range from slying machines to parachutes--weapons of war and clockwork robots.

Leonardo sees himself in Baba, as a kindred soul and a true creator — someone who, like himself, serves beauty and truth rather than power and status. He and a group of Renaissance geniuses are vowed to secrecy as Keepers of the Sauce and other Sacred Knowledge. Together, they search ancient texts and charts to unravel the mysteries of Nature and harvest supernatural ingredients under the Pastanova Sky.

I came here from a place so far away
To this island that embraced me.
From the time I was a young girl
To this moment here today.

Scene Description:

Return to Identity -- Roots & Authenticity

Wiseguy$ ---  Thieve$ --- Pretender$

There's no limit to what people will do for a taste of Fame and Immortality. Some will just settle for gold-like Joey Scambuti. These comic villians are as ridiculous as they are dangerous. But they know that finding a wealthy patron is how you succeed in the Renaissance Era

Put Your Money Down - image1_edited.jpg

A Smooth-talking con artist who works with the Roman Agency of Protective Services (RAPS)-- Scambuti is known in religious and political circles as a bodyguard and detective.  Formerly employed by the Pope to learn secrets of the Sacred Sauce from Papo --Joey has unfinished business that motivates him under his new boss, Duke Vincenzio. Joey's ambition gives him a neurotic edge--too willing to please--and too much of a sociopath to stay undercover. His impulsiveness makes him accident prone and a danger to himself and everyone around him.

I'm a Renaissance Man - image2.jpg

A flamboyant legend in his own mind-- Machabelli is the ultimate pretender and narcissist without taste or culinary skill.  His fantasy to be a famous entertainer leads him to open a cabaret-restaurant, where he performs for a captive audience. His envy toward Baba transforms him into a comical villain, conspiring with Mona Lisa to disrupt the Quest by stealing the recipe and the glory.  A proud Spaniard, Machabelli dresses as a bullfighter or a flamenco dancer, depending on the day. He is performance without soul - the aristocracy's counterfeit hero.

Story Summary

THE STORY
Bellacopia is an island culture where chefs are celebrities, inventors are visionaries, and creation itself is revered. At the center of its mythology lies the unfinished Sauce of Immortality — begun by a Cosmic Chef and left incomplete to prevent misuse. The return of the Pastanova Sky signals the rare moment when the Sauce can finally be completed.  It appears in the heavens as a meteor shower of pasta and stardust.
Baba is discovered as an infant during this legendary meteor shower and raised by master chef Papo Gostoso in a joyful culinary school for orphaned children. Gifted with instinctive balance and musical sensitivity, Baba grows into a prodigy — and forms a deep bond with Zinfandella, daughter of the visionary inventor, Leonardo Divino.
But when a rival chef, Prince Machabelli, covertly burns down the culinary school in a jealous rage, Papo is left disabled.  Zinfandella leaves Bellacopia to visit her mother in Milan and Baba is at his lowest. His fear of fire and new insecurities cause him to hide his brilliance. He soon finds himself enslaved in the kitchen of rival Machabelli’s restaurant and cabaret—correcting his dull and ordinary recipes, while Machabelli claims the glory. Years pass—until the return of the Pastanova Sky.
Zinfandella is returning to Bellacopia and Leonardo is beginning his search for a new chef to embark on the Sacred Quest. During Zinfandella’s grand homecoming, attended
by Duke Vincenzio, Leonardo and her mother, Mona Lisa—Machabelli performs his flamboyant anthem “I’m a Renaissance Man,” pandering publicly to convince Leonardo that he is the obvious choice to be the chef who will restore the Sauce of Immortality.
During dinner, the Duke suffers a severe allergic reaction— Machabelli weaponizes the crisis to accuse Baba of a plot to poison him.  Baba is disgraced and fired in front of the entire room of Zinfandella’s family and friends. The humiliation confirms his deepest fear: that he will only exist in the shadow of someone else’s success.  The major turning point is complete when he is hired by Aunt Chovi who ran the orphanage where he was raised.  She hires him as the head chef in her Bistro, restored from the remnants of the culinary school where he was raised.
As the Pastanova Meteor Shower continues to ignite the heavens, Zinfandella invites Leonardo to dine where Baba is working.  She entertains the crowded bistro with a fiery performance called: “A Place Where I Belong”—revealing the love of her roots in Bellacopia. Leonardo is inspired by Baba’s kitchen mastery and offers him a chance to step up to a higher calling and begin a new Quest.
But the quest not only requires a series of dangerous adventures—each ingredient must be tasted and understood for Baba to confront and heal a fractured part of himself:

THE QUEST BEGINS

A musical initiation titled “At the Speed of Light” with Renaissance celebrities sends Baba out on his adventure to gather the Sauce’s final elements. Each ingredient lies within a landscape more fantastical than the last. Marcel and Zinfandella are chosen to train Baba how to fly.  Baba feels overwhelmed, but excited to have Zinfandella as his teacher and friend.  Zin is wise but torn between her roots in Bellacopia and the world of status and entitlement. As their journey unfolds, so too does their love — challenged by secrets, tested by betrayal, and ultimately made pure through sacrifice.

Lava Salt demands courage — requiring him to step toward danger rather than retreat into invisibility.

Falcon Seeds test his intuition — teaching him to trust his inner balance rather than seek external validation.

Neptune Orchid challenges his guarded heart — revealing that love is not a distraction from greatness, but the force that tempers it.

Moly Root demands patience and endurance — proving that strength without restraint becomes domination.

During the mythical adventures through the four elements, Baba and Zinfandella's relationship is glamorized through a European publication, and Baba's deeds capture the public imagination. Machabelli is enraged by Baba's growing fame and aligns himself with Duke Vincenzio and Mona Lisa, launching a public campaign to sabotage Baba's Quest by printing false news that undermines his relationship with Zinfandella.  While Machabelli seeks to claim authorship of the Sauce--Joey Scambuti, as the Duke's fast-talking investigator and disruptor, becomes an Italian version of Inspector Clouseau.  Inspired by the physical comedy of Sebastian Maniscalco, Scambuti wears disguises throughout the story. His swagger and confidence constantly outrun his competence.  He and two wise-guy companions shadow Baba's adventures and attempt to mirror his heroic feats in a series of comedic scenes.  His botched attempts to steal the essential ingredients lead Duke Vincenzio to eventually fire Scambuti and return to Milan to prepare an armada of ships.

THE CLIMAX

Baba's journey becomes more than a quest for the Sauce of Immortality — it is a series of tests to gain powers of Intuition, Courage, and Trust. The Neptune Orchid from the Valley of Narcissus was fake. Baba is poisoned by imitation love, and after an emotional breakup with Zinfandella, Baba continues alone.  By the final act, Zin must choose to risk everything to save him. Their love is no longer unspoken as Baba stirs the final ingredient and completes the sacred sauce--not for fame, but for Zinfandella —Baba faces a defining choice: complete it publicly to prove his worth—or rescue Zinfandella from a river of lava in the heat of the final scene. When she delivers the true Neptune Orchid to complete the sauce — she also chooses Baba. She has seen through the deception of controlling forces around her and embraces the only reality she can trust--how she feels about Baba. As she revives Baba to complete the Sauce with the final ingredient they finally find completion within themselves.  Love is the ingredient that relieves all ambition and need for power.  As other seek to weaponize the Sauce of Immortality--Baba surrenders it to the violent circumstances that he cannot control and makes it unattainable to those that would misuse it and do harm.

BABA PASTANOVA blends everything I love about music, humor and storytelling —combined with fantasy and mythology. The characters developed from people I've known--unique and eccentric individuals who inspire and entertain with passion and imagination.  The compositions in the soundtrack are rooted in my lifelong love of Brazilian rhythms and songs--combined with a tradition of  American songwriting and cinematic orchestration. The subtle beauty of harmonies that combine classical and contemporary elements are a part of my vocabulary.  Add to this the sensuality of food, the culinary arts, and the vivid colors and flavors born out of Nature--and you have a cornucopia of Soul.   --Paul Montesano

Legendary Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal has allowed me to use his name, likeness and music to contribute to this story.
